Smiles

Nick is so cute with his smiles right now.

Vacuum vs. Carpet

So, will my vacuum or my carpet wear out first?

It's official, Nick is just one of the babies that has colic. I didn't used to believe other moms when they said that their babies would just cry for no good reason, but now I have a whole new appreciation for my vacuum cleaner. Let's be honest, I liked my vacuum before. I liked to vacuum each morning so that the house would start clean for the day. Now, though, I LOVE my vacuum because it is only one of two things that calms Nick down (the other is the bathtub). These days, we vacuum upstairs and downstairs at least twice a day and take at least one bath, sometimes two or three, a day. My sweet mother-in-law was trying to ease my frustration the other day when she told me that colic usually only lasts until babies are about 4-6 months...4-6 MONTHS! We're barely at 2 months. That means I might be halfway there, but I might only be 1/3 of the way there. Oh well, I'll just keep toughing it out & hoping that the vacuum doesn't give up before Nick does.

President Hinckley

Just a quote to remind us how down to earth President Hinckley was.
"Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal, is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed. The fact is that most putts don't drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to be just like people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, and most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is just like an old time rail journey ... delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride."

Snow Again

It snowed yesterday, so we stayed inside & made homemade wheat bread and even milled the wheat off my father-in-law's farm in Delta. Now,it's snowing out again today...what else is new in the mountains? We've had about 9" today, so we decided to just enjoy it. This morning Ryan wanted "regular pancakes" for breakfast (sometimes we do dinosaur pancakes aka: German pancakes). I think I've spoiled him though because he wanted the "good" syrup, too! I caved in and made them for him. Here's the recipe for the yummiest Buttermilk Syrup:
Buttermilk Syrup (yummy)
From the Kitchen of: Kelly Stanworth
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter
2 tbs. Karo Syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
Combine and boil for 7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in:
2 tsp. vanilla

Take this test!

You're brown, a credible, stable color that's reminiscent of fine wood, rich leather, and wistful melancholy. Most likely, you're a logical, practical person ruled more by your head than your heart. With your inquisitive mind and insatiable curiosity, you're probably a great problem solver. And you always gather all of the facts before coming to a timely, informed decision. Easily intrigued, you're constantly finding new ways to challenge your mind, whether it's by reading the newspaper, playing a trivia game, or composing a piece of music. Brown is an impartial, neutral color, which means you tend to see the difference between fact and opinion easily and are open to many points of view. Trustworthy and steady, you really are a brown at heart.

The Winter Blahs

We're just getting over our second round of strep in three weeks with Ryan. He get strep about the second week in January and we quickly got on an antibiotic. He finished it after ten days and within two days had strep again. Back down to the doctor we went and got two different antibiotics to get rid of it for good this time. Apparently Ryan is a carried of the strep virus, just like you can be a carrier of mono. Grandma RaeMi has been so great to come down and help so that I didn't have to deal with the whining all the time. Besides, it is so much better to have Grandma here because she makes cool projects like this "Peter Pan & Robin Hood" hat. Do be sure to notice the Spaghetti O's left over on the face, it was the only thing he thought he could eat for days.
I can't believe my little boy is 5 years old already. He is so big and such a good boy. When we went to get our flu shots a few months ago Ryan told Jeff, "Dad, I'll go first and show you how it doesn't hurt." When we were done he even called Grandpa Rex to tell him that the flu shot doesn't hurt and that Grandpa needed to go get one. I think Grandpa regretted not getting one a few week later when he got the flu while hunting in Wyoming. Ryan asked the other day when we were going to get the fishing boat and camp trailer out of the shed so that we could go camping and fishing. I told him that I'm not ready to take Nick camping, but that he was more than welcome to sleep in the backyard in the igloo that he and Uncle Craig and Dad built! He didn't go for that. He's like me, wants the comfort while "roughing it."
By the way...Tay, post your blog address on one of the comments!

A New Swing For Nick!

When you have your first baby, you go out and buy one of everything! With Nick, I decided that I wouldn't buy a swing. I had bought one for Ryan and he hated it and never spent any time in it. That swing was in like-new condition and I thought it would serve its purpose just fine...no need for something new that we already own. I've been glad I didn't buy a swing because Nick doesn't seem to like it either. He's doesn't like the car, doesn't like his crib, doesn't like a pacifier (much to my dismay), and he doesn't like the swing. This past week, though, Nick started staying in the swing for a few minutes at a time before totally freaking out. He even stayed in it a few times during dinner. Wahoo, a hands free meal! Well, the swing broke right as he was starting to get used to it. So, off the Babies R Us I went. I intended to just buy the small $59.00 travel swing, but oh no my friend, we ended up with much more. This one looked perfect...it swings back and forth and side to side, it's soft, it plays classical music, it plays nature sounds, it hooks up to an ipod, it vibrates, it does it all. I was sure Nick was going to love it so much that he would take to sleeping in the new swing-a step up from sleeping on the couch. So far we haven't had a lot of success with the new "baby soother," so it claims! It is cute, though. My favorite part is the little ears on the head support. He looks like a little bear cub when he does stay in the new, expensive decoration in our family room.

Watched Over

Jeff informed my on Friday night that we were to be to the bank at 10:00 on Saturday morning to sign that papers for the new commercial building we are buying. He also let me know that he had errands to run when we were done, so we needed to drive separate. On Saturday morning we started getting snow about 9:00 and it came down hard. Jeff and I left in both trucks and he followed me. We got about three blocks away from our house and were heading down Elk Ridge Drive when I lost control of the truck (going 20 mph) and ended up flipped around on the wrong side of the road and stuck in an embankment. The ground must have been pretty soft because I couldn't get out. Jeff hooked up the tow straps and got me out (I wasn't a happy camper).

On Sunday we blessed Nick. It was nice to have our friends and family join us for this event. I couldn't find a blessing outfit that I liked, but I finally just went to the LDS Distribution Center and found this one. I didn't absolutely love it (especially because it had a "priest" collar before I cut the button off that was smack in the center), but it was pretty cute after it was on. I should have thought ahead like Kaytee and made something. My mom made the blanket a while back when she retired and had nothing to do. I really think she made it in hopes that it would be used by a grandchild. I'm sure she was starting to think that neither myself, Cory, or Craig were going to add to the family. She especially thought that of us because Jeff kept telling her that I didn't want to have more kids (it was a cop out on him not admitting that he didn't think he was ready to have 5 kids). It's hard to believe that Nick is 5 1/2 weeks old already. Wow, that's 5 1/2 weeks of no sleep...incredible that I can still function.
After Nick's baby blessing, after we all changed, and after we'd all eaten...then we decided to take a family picture with the members that we could round up. There's a lot of people who aren't in the picture and lots of friends who were busy eating or playing downstairs, but this is the jist of Jeff's side of the family.
